The Extended Intelligence assignment focused on exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a world where humanity has successfully addressed and recovered from the climate emergency. The assignment tasked students with proposing an AI-based product, service, or experience based on Machine Learning (ML) to support future MDEF 2044 students and their needs.
We decided to approach the project through a first-person perspective, envisioning the challenges students might face at the IAAC in such a world and how AI could help solve those problems.
Gianna is an advanced artificial intelligence assistant designed to support IAAC students in identifying, disassembling, and assembling objects. Drawing inspiration from Jarvis, the AI assistant in Iron Man, Gianna leverages a network of sensors, image-recognition cameras, and sound technology integrated throughout the IAAC building for continuous monitoring and real-time interaction. This allows Gianna to recognize objects, analyze their structures, and provide precise disassembly instructions while pointing out where to find the necessary tools within the IAAC campus.
How Gianna Works
Object identification and AI analysis: The user takes a photo of an object, which Gianna analyzes to identify it and determine the best way to disassemble it.
Disassembly instructions generation: Based on its analysis, Gianna generates detailed disassembly instructions, complete with visual diagrams for easier understanding.
Tool recommendations: Gianna suggests the appropriate tools required to disassemble the object.
Tool location in IAAC: Gianna provides real-time information on where the required tools can be found on the IAAC campus, making the disassembly process more efficient.
Datasets and Research
We explored several datasets, but chose to use pre-existing models with built-in datasets for flexibility.
Reflection
This course was immersive and stimulating. For me, it was the first time engaging with this topic, and I found the process of asking questions, even if they seemed stupid, and gradually understanding the basics incredibly helpful. The ethical discussions, especially around bias, privacy, and dependency on AI, were particularly thought-provoking. I now have a deeper appreciation for how technology can enhance our capabilities, but also a heightened awareness of the potential consequences, including the loss of creativity and autonomy. I will continue to reflect on these concerns as I explore further advancements in AI.
